Hey BMW owners with the N55, ever had to do a water pump?

BMW in their infinite, German wisdom has installed an electric water pump on the lower part of the engine, changing it is essentially impossible with out a lift or spending hours on your back remove many many fasteners , I miss my Jag where all I had to remove was the battery.

No yet, but I’m not looking forward to doing it in my 328i.

Well, at least it’s electric. Mine (like most VAG products) is belt-driven, on an interference engine, so when the crappy impeller falls apart and the pump locks up, you get the pleasure of destroying your engine BEFORE it overheats.

Wait, that’s a feature!

Yes.

Nope, but considering you need to remove portions of the oil system to swap an alternator I say godspeed and I don’t envy you. I love the platform but I am tapped out... Looking forward to going back to an NA V8 for my DD.

Wow. That’s unbelievable. You’d think one of the benefits you’d get out of going to electric water pumps would be... “5 minute pump replacements”.

It’s funny how easy, by comparison, it’s been to replace GM water pumps on LT/LS engines over the years.  Not to mention the $49 pump price...

Right I mean it is electric why hang it on the engine at all?  Put it on the Radiator behind a easy access door.

I’m thinking it is time to think of going the Res to mod daily driver route with a 67 Cougar or something like that.  Modern engine trans up to a point reworked suspension Cage and 5 point harness

Planned obsolescence is why.

For a daily? I probably wouldn’t. A s a weekend toy? Absolutely. Not saying it wouldn’t be amazing but even with a cage I would think twice bout the amount of time I would be spending with out a modern safety structure, airbags and other systems. I make no bones that each time I get into my  Mustang that I might not get back out even if its not my fault. Other people on the road are just way to distracted/dangerous. On the flip side I am modifying my '89 which has been a lot of fun. I am onto suspension, wheels and tires now.

No and I’m not sure how high to prioritize it. My car has exactly 100k but no service records. I’d be surprised if it hadn’t been done but not something I want to chance. If you do it let us know how it goes.

Yes! Insomuch as I paid somebody to do it. Cost about $1k, because the part was $450 and coolant is stupid expensive. I was on board with DIY until I saw that you had to remove most of the radiator /  fan.

I think it has to be located near the thermostat in order to direct coolant appropriately. And the thermostat needs to be on the engine.

If it’s anything like the N52 it shouldn’t be too bad u nl ess you have an xDrive car. You’ll need e-torx sockets and extensions and replacement water pump bolts (they’re torque-to-yield)  but it’s all pretty logical.

The ls with an electric fan is pretty easy. My personal record is a Jeep Liberty. Less than 10 minutes. In the drive way.

On the X3 you need to remove the radiator in order to get the pump out.

But overall it’s that bad. You just need the right tools and patience.

A cage without a helmet is a good way to split your skull in a collision.

I have 126k on mine and nothing in the records since 20k miles (when the PO bought it and had it CPO’d, it was dealer serviced after that)  to show it was serviced. I’m getting it done next month just to be safe. It seems like anything past 60k miles is borrowed time.
